Create/Edit Cube: Measures

Measures store the data for a particular business measure, such as manufacturing costs or units sold. Measures that share characteristics, such as the same dimensions, belong in the same cube.

Measures

Lists the measures defined for this cube.

Default: Identifies the measure that is the default for queries against the cube when no measure is specified, such as SELECT * FROM cube_view. The default measure is set initially to the first measure created for the cube. This choice affects the performance of queries that rely on a default measure. Choose a stored measure for the best performance.

If all measures in the cube are calculated, then choose a calculated measure that does not contain a row-producing calculation. For example, LAG and LEAD calculations generate new rows for time periods that did not previously exist in the cube.

The default measure determines whether the OLAP engine loops over every possible cell in the cube (dense looping) for the query results, or only over the cells that have stored values (sparse looping). Sparse looping is faster, but dense looping is required for some calculations.

Name: A simple name for the measure object in the database, adhering to the rules for first-class database object names. Enter underscores where you want spaces in the default labels.

Short Label: A short descriptive name for display where space is limited, which can contain mixed case, spaces, and symbols.

Long Label: A long descriptive name for display, which can contain mixed case, spaces, and symbols.

Description: Additional descriptive text, which can contain mixed case, spaces, and symbols.

Display names are typically in mixed case and can contain spaces. The default names are derived from the object name. You can overwrite the defaults.

Measure Properties

Detect Data Type: Select this option for Oracle OLAP to set the data type of the measure based on its mapping to a relational source. Before you map the measure, it is set initially to NUMBER. When the measure is mapped, Oracle OLAP synchronizes the data type of the measure with the source column before loading the data.

Data Type: Choose a data type that matches the data type of the source data. Depending on your selection, you may set the following additional parameters. You may not be able to change the data type or a parameter setting after loading data, if one or more values is incompatible with the new setting.
