parallel period

In a calculation template, this option compares values in the current aggregate time period, such as Year or Quarter, with values at the same level in an earlier aggregate time period. For example, you might compare values for this year against last year: Q1.2012 with Q1.2011, Q2.2012 with Q2.2011, and so forth at the Quarter level; Jul-2012 with Jul-2011, Aug-2012 with Aug-2011, and so forth at the Month level.

Two parameters enable you to control how to identify the parallel period when the aggregate time periods have different numbers of values:

For example, you might compare days in January to days in February. Because January has 31 days and February has only 28 or 29 days, they do not match up one-to-one. The results are different depending on whether you identify the parallel period from its position from the beginning or the end of the months, and whether you match the remaining values to the closest parallel period.
